Holidays with Mom: The Next Steps to Senior Living

Posted by Oaks Senior Living | 2 minute read

You had a wonderful holiday with your loved ones but noticed that your parent was not their usual self. Some things you may have seen were unopened personal mail or bills, letters from the bank about overdue payments or overdrawn balances, mail piled up in their mailbox, or the house not as clean as they usually keep it. All of these signs and much more are common signs that your mom may need to explore assisted living or potentially memory care.

It’s not a coincidence that Oaks Senior Living gets phone calls and information requests right after the holidays. We understand that it’s a challenging and emotional decision to bring your parent or loved one to a senior living facility. To help ease the worry, we have many ways to help you make the right decision for your loved one.

Get them involved in choosing a senior living community

Alzheimer’s disease or dementia, you may have to be the one taking control of the decision-making. Consider doing the majority of the research but include them by having discussions about senior living options as well as their wants and preferences.

Budgeting for senior care

Finances will most likely be the biggest factor in deciding the right senior living community for your loved one. The first step is to take a look at your financials and figure out what you can afford on a monthly basis. Sometimes this may include the decision of selling a family home, taking out a second mortgage or even cashing in a life insurance policy. There are many financial resources to help cover the cost of senior care.

Set up a tour at a local senior living facility

Nothing can compare to a visit to the community that that your family is considering. After you have viewed all of the photos, brochures, and reviews, it is time to schedule a visit with you and your parent. A fantastic time to visit is during an activity, where your loved one can get a sense of the culture and how the residents interact. The decision may take more than one tour of the facilities, but it will be the best way to decide what is the perfect fit for your parent.

Come to a decision

After you have gotten your family involved, decided on a budget, and toured communities, you should be very comfortable with your decision in choosing the right alternative living situation for your loved one. We know that you and your family will be happy at an Oaks Senior Living Community, so give us a call and find out for yourself all that we have to offer.
