This month, we’re getting to know John, a resident of Oaks at Hampton. He was born in Taylor County, Georgia on August 25, 1923. John was the baby of a farming family. His dad farmed cotton and corn and his mother took care of John, his four sisters, and four brothers. A busy household, indeed!
John went to work for Uncle Sam and joined the Army. He headed to Germany and “chased Hitler”, but never found him. Finishing high school after coming back from the service, John continued his education at Georgia Southwest and then Georgia Southern, earning a Masters; Specialist Degree in Education. John put his knowledge to good use, working as an Elementary School Principal and becoming a husband and father. He and his wife had two daughters, Vivian and LuAnn.
John has been a widower since 2011 and when he retired from the school system, started a senior choir at his church. The group was called “Saints Alive” and every Monday you would find them visiting local Assisted Living and Nursing Homes, bringing musical cheer to the residents.
It’s no wonder that every day, you can hear his voice as he belts out songs walking throughout the halls of our community. John also enjoys the new adult coloring books, morning exercise, and spending time with his grandchildren.
